What’s The Point Of 360 Degree Porn?

Technology is evolving – we get that. We also get that often, porn will change depending on the technology at the time… and with virtual reality headsets comes virtual reality porn, and now we are getting a glimpse at one of the very first trailers for a 360 degree virtual reality porn film.

Couple indoors. Sensual brunette in black lingerie and handsome man kissing. Office romance concept

However, the point of porn is to focus on those happily fucking away in the kitchen/bedroom/spaceship that the porn is set in. With 360 degree porn, people are going to have the chance to look around the set a little better… while ignoring the couple fucking each other hard on the other side of the room. So what is the point of 360 degree porn?

VirtualPorn360

With the announcement of virtual reality headsets that you can actually buy, it wasn’t going to be long until porn producers decided to tap into this market by going “you know what would be awesome? Virtual reality porn!”

Some lucky people have already had the chance to experience what virtual reality porn is like, but the problem is that the field of view is very limited. With virtual reality, people always forget that it only covers a 180 degree viewing angle, meaning the focus is on the action and the surrounding area, but not much more.

A new start-up, named VirtualPorn360, has realised that this could have huge potential for virtual reality porn. They aim to be “the first company in the world to broadcast and market pornographic experiences in 360 degrees for virtual reality devices like the Oculus Rift.”

To look at the two you might not think there are that many differences, and you’d be right in a way. The only difference that we can see is that you get a whole 360 degree view of the action, rather than 180.

So now, instead of enjoying virtual reality where you look at the performers, you can now spin around to take in the entire room that they are having sex in, before coming back to the randy couple.

What’s the point?

When I first read this, I was stunned, though I’m guessing it wasn’t in the way the creators were hoping. They might have been thinking “yes! People are going to LOVE this idea, where they get to be the camera-person on a porn shoot and control what they see!”

Well, that isn’t what we’re thinking. If you want to watch porn, you want to watch porn. The 360 experience will mean that you can turn completely away from the action, so you’ll still be able to hear them moaning and groaning but you won’t be able to see what is actually happening… doesn’t that defeat the point of watching porn in the first place?

Don’t get me wrong – I understand virtual reality porn and the appeal of it. As a guy, you can watch the woman slowly back onto the man’s cock before she starts to thrust back against it. As a woman, you can enjoy the feeling of being surrounded by sex hungry men and feel your heart start to race as one approaches you.

But there aren’t many situations where 360 degrees of virtual reality porn will be useful. Yes, in an orgy or gang-bang style video, it would be great. You could constantly move around and watch the film over and over again, without having to see the same things happening each time. It would be a hell of a lot of fun and a turn-on to watch.

However, for an ordinary video of a couple having sex in bed? There’s little point, unless you’d rather watch the wall on the far side of the room instead of watching the pair fuck?

Going ahead

The trailer for one of their first videos was on YouTube for all to see. YouTube has supported 360 videos for a long time, where you can click and drag to change the angle. It gives you a nice teaser of just what it would be like to be in control of what you see.

However, the key word there is that the video “was” on YouTube. Although the video showed nothing more than a room and a woman on her knees sucking off the guy (with the VirtualPorn360 logo covering up the bits that aren’t allowed on YouTube), it has been removed “because its content violated YouTube’s Terms of Service”.

Not only is YouTube against the company trying to make a name for itself, but many newspapers are too. They, like us, are struggling to figure out what makes 360 porn so much better than 180 porn. Vice writer Emanuel Maiberg states that “360° VR Porn Is Great If You Want to Watch Anything But Sex”, and that is pretty damn accurate for the entire situation.

Okay, so although many people are a little sceptical of just how successful this will be, the project is still going ahead. In fact, there are already some 360 degree porn videos on their website, for those interested in giving them a go. At the moment, there aren’t many videos on the website. They say that they will release a new one every two weeks, but that is a long time to wait.

Do you think that 360 degrees of porn is going to be better than 180, or is it just a novelty that will wear off as soon as it has begun? Have you tried it out? What do you think about it? You can let us know, whether you are eager for the next video or you don’t understand why it is being made, by commenting in the box below, or by visiting the Escort Wales forum.
