No Porn For Oculus Rift Users!

It was only last month that we spoke about virtual reality and how it will soon be paving the way for a new type of porn where you get to experience true POV porn. Whether you’d use it regularly or not, everyone has been waiting for the chance to turn on their Oculus Rift and get some virtual reality porn to watch.

Despite previously saying that porn would not be blocked from the headsets, and that the platform was “open” for all to create content on, the founders have had a change of heart. They have now decided that they don’t want the Oculus using for porn, and so have said that the content will be blocked from their app store.

“No intentions of blocking adult content”

It was only last month that we spoke about this, when founder Palmer Luckey said that he had “absolutely no intentions of blocking adult content from the headsets”, despite the fact that people were worried.

After all, programmers have been having a field day with the headsets so far. They have been able to create even more immersive games that put you at the centre of the action, and making some virtual reality POV porn would be even better. While you might not like the idea of using it all the time, we’re pretty sure everyone would want to have a go at it once, right?

Well, people began to panic that the Oculus Rift would block porn from the headsets, meaning that you can’t get off in that way. It sounds a little like something off out Demolition Man, only a lot more fun. After all, you are put in the driving seat and it is as though everything you see is happening to you

Thankfully, Luckey went on to explain that “the Rift is an open platform. We don’t control what software can run on it and that’s a big deal.” They didn’t want to restrict the kind of things that users could create for it, and porn is such a huge market that they must have been thinking about the money they could make from the sales for that purpose.

Change on plans

Of course we should have known that getting virtual reality porn wouldn’t be as easy and simple as that. Were we really hoping for too much by crossing our fingers for virtual reality porn?

It now seems that Oculus Rift are going to be checking the type of content that is available on their app store to make sure it is appropriate, and their new guidelines mean that virtual reality porn is no longer possible on the Oculus Rift.

The CEO Brendan Iribe said that “we are going to monitor the content and make sure that it fits the policy we put up which is this safe and clean environment that everyone can know, and love, and trust just like other popular app stores… you’re going to need to be approved first.”

That’s right – before you can get something posted on the app store, their team will have to check that it is appropriate for them. It is believed that horror games will be the biggest sellers on the store. As a result, they want to make sure that the “comfort ratings” of the content are right, and that there are no hidden jump scares in games that shouldn’t have any, in case it causes complications for sensitive users.

What does this mean for porn?

However, these new guidelines have also made it pretty clear that pornography will not be available, as a spokesperson said that “Oculus only distributes developer content that meets their terms of service, which forbid pornographic content from being a part of the Oculus Store.”

This is a complete change from their earlier statement that “the Rift is an open platform”, as they are now going to be controlling what is and isn’t available.

Following this, people wanted to know why porn was being blocked and then went on to ask about extreme violence in the app store. The response was very unsatisfactory: “Oculus only distributes develop content that meets their terms of service, but they aren’t open to discuss what those terms are at this time.”

So it seems that violence might be allowed on the store but sex won’t be. The reaction on social media was fantastic. One user said “Ah geez I can’t believe oculus rift is gonna block porn what a downer” while another went on to say that “Oculus Rift will block out porn. Now there’s no reason to buy one”.

Will sales change?

The final Oculus Rift version and the app store will be launching in the first quarter of 2016, and people have been constantly talking about what is available on it. However, one of the most popular topics is virtual reality porn, which it seems will no longer happen.

We’re hoping that they have another dramatic turn around and allow it, perhaps with an age rating meaning that you cannot access the adult app store without proving your age, but it doesn’t seem likely. What does seem likely is that the sales might suffer as a result.

Thankfully there seem to be many more virtual reality headsets coming out, with Sony expected to announce their own at E3 this week. If they don’t block content as Oculus has done, they could be on to a real winner for adult sales.

What do you think about this? Are they right to block adult content from the store, or will they be losing a huge market? Would you ever use a virtual reality headset to enjoy some hot POV porn? Is virtual reality porn really the future, or is it simply a novelty we will get bored of?
