Here at Escort Wales we are big supporters of gay equality. We all smiled when the U.S Supreme Court voted to make same-sex marriage in all states legal. However, we understand there is a way to go and legal protection is very much different to real acceptance. It will take a good few years for that situation to improve. You can’t legally make people completely comfortable with homosexuality. That is a personal choice. It is pretty obvious that some people may need to see that the world doesn’t blow up now gay marriage has been legalised.
Still, we have to admit, things really aren’t that bad, especially when you compare it to other places in the world. Last week we saw the attack and subsequent death of 16 year old Shira Banki at a Jerusalem Gay Pride march. She was one of six people attacked at the event last Thursday.
Yishai Schlissel, an ultra-Orthodox Jew, who carried out a similar attack in 2005, was arrested at the scene.
Israeli Prime Minister has announced a crackdown on ultra-nationalists Jews who are already accused of burning to death an 18 month old Palestinian girl.
Horrific images of the attack have emerged with the attacker being pictured reaching inside his coat and then waving the knife over his head. He then started stabbing the marchers whilst screaming, before being restrained by a police officer.
Now the young lady has died, there are a number of vigils taking place in her honour. We also send our condolences to the family.
This is huge problem though. It is when religious extremists get involved that you see real problems. It doesn’t matter if you are Jew, Muslim, Christian or whatever. There are people of all faiths who believe that homosexuality is wrong and will act in a violent manner. I will just leave out there that in the Old Testament it says ‘Thou Shalt not Kill’. The religious nutters always seem to cherry pick the parts of their book that they like and ignore the rest.
The Silence is Deafening
One of the next big steps is for religious leaders to make it clear that these kind of attacks are not in the name of God. Sometimes the silence from ultra-orthodox Jewish leaders and their equivalents in other religions make it seem to many as though, even if they aren’t supported, they aren’t seen as being THAT bad.
As a world we have a responsibility to let everyone know that this isn’t acceptable. Thankfully we have seen no real violence as a result of the U.S Supreme Court verdict. However, we always need to be watchful.
Thankfully there aren’t that many people who think it is acceptable to go around killing young girls because of their sexuality or beliefs. But it is only when religions stop demonsing those who are different that the ground will stop being fertile for such atrocities.
